Turn your front porch into an evil lab with these budget-friendly mad scientist Halloween decorations.
My teenager needed to do a spooky art project for school, so I put him in charge of this year’s outdoor Halloween decorations,. He channeled Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyl and turned our front porch into a mad scientist’s lab.
We love decorating our front porch with a creative new theme every Halloween. Our goal is to use what we have or make DIY outdoor Halloween decorations .
We try to tell a story and create spooky scenes without buying lots of new props. We like using cheap Halloween decorations from the dollar store, vintage items and even things from our yard.
This approach challenges us to get creative and keeps our budget in check. Even though we use many of the same items year after year, the look is far from cookie cutter.

Mad Scientist Halloween Decorations
To create his mad scientist lab, my son used crumbling old books, my vintage typewriter, assorted skeletons and skulls, and some scientific eqiupment.
This year, we left a lot of things behind in the bins in our attic and didn’t buy a single pumpkin. But the porch is still plenty (un)welcoming for trick or treaters.
(And my son got a good grade for his Halloween-themed art installation, too.)
Let’s take a tour and I’ll share some of our favorite Halloween decorating tricks.
Use a Halloween shower curtain as a backdrop
We’ve used this haunted house shower curtain in our Halloween decor before. I even wrote a blog post about decorating with shower curtains in unexpected ways.
My son used the shower curtain as a backdrop behind the mad scientist’s desk. I imagine this is the view out of his lab window.
The peeling paint on my black buffet adds to the ambience, but I’ll definitely need to repaint it before decorating the porch for Christmas.
Use sticks from your yard to create a spooky scene
To give the backdrop some dimension, we gathered fallen branches from the woods. We used them to make a spooky tree, clustering the branches in a bucket and securing to the porch with fishing line and rope.
in the past, I’ve filled our porch urns with branches and hung bundles above the front door. Yard waste makes makes great Halloween decor!
After Halloween, we’ll burn the branches in our firepit.
You can never have too many skulls
I keep a bin of skulls in the attic because you can never have too many in your Halloween displays.
Thankfully, they’re cheap at the dollar store. I buy a few more every year and use them to fill lanterns and other vessels. (I share more ways to use plastic skulls in this post on cheap Halloween decorations.)
My son liked the idea that his mad scientist kept a collection of skulls — shruken and life-sized — in his laboratory.
Specimen Jars and Crystal Balls
For past Halloween decorations, I’ve made spooky specimen jars and floating skull crystal balls using dollar store supplies.
They made nice props for the mad scientist’s Halloween lair, alongside some faux animal skeletons and rubber mice and bugs
Dried moss gives everything a creepy, aged look. Fake cobwebs, creepy cloth or black cheesecoth would have the same effect.
Don’t forget the potions
I think mad scientists are a lot like teenagers — or at least a lot like my teenager. Their spaces are cluttered and dusty, and you might find something growing in the bottles and cups littering their desks.
My son made the green potions in the beakers with water and food coloring. But I’m pretty sure he could have emptied one of the cups on his nightstand and created the same effect.
Some crusty bottles with printable poison labels are an easy Halloween craft project.
Add Vintage Elements
Our porch is covered and pretty well protected from the elements. So, I don’t mind using my vintage typewriter or old books on the porch for Halloween.
My son printed out a gothic title page from Frankenstein that he found on the Internet to use in the typewriter. But you could easily design your own typewriter page using gothic fonts.
A black candelabra with red drip candles is a nice touch.
A microscope, a leather doctor’s bag or other vintage medical or scientific equipment would have been good props to use, as well.
You don’t have to use real pumpkins
I’m a fan of cinderella pumpkins and warty heirloom varieties. But these past two years, we’ve scaled back the number of pumpkins we use for fall and Halloween.
We decorated later than normal this year, and it seemed like a waste of money to buy a bunch of pumpkins to display for such a short time.
So, we only used a couple of fake plastic pumpkins and two galvanized ones. I don’t think the trick or treaters will miss the real pumpkins.
The plants in our porch urns vibe with the mad scientist theme.
We’re pretending that the ornamental berries, peppers and cabbages are poisonous plants the scientist is growing for his potions. The skulls and lighted sticks help sell that narrative.
I think the teenager did a pretty good job with these Halloween decorations. In fact, I may turn over haunting to him full time!
