How to Decorate a Mantel for Fall

Decorating, Fall Decor, Holiday & Seasonal, Home Tour

I have been unveiling my fall decor a little bit by a little bit.

How to decorate a mantel using traditional fall colors and natural elements.

I’m really not being a tease; that’s just how the fall decorating has gone this year… bit by bit, room by room, waylaid by things like rainy weather, kid birthday parties and real life.

But I think I’m finally finished…and not a moment too soon because Halloween and Thanksgiving and gulp, Christmas, are just around the corner.

    Falling for Fall Tour
Today, I’m participating in the Falling for Fall tour, organized by my friend Pamela of From My Front Porch to Yours.

While I’ve been veering away from traditional fall colors for most of my seasonal decor this year, I couldn’t resist using oranges, reds and yellows in the keeping room and breakfast nook where our family spends most of our time.

How to decorate a mantel using traditional fall colors and natural elements.

Except for one soggy, brief trip last week, we haven’t had a chance yet to visit the local orchard or pumpkin patch as is our family tradition.

These fall table decorations were inspired by a trip to the farm. Apples, pumpkins, denim and candles in fabulous fall scents help set the scene. #LoveAmericanHome #ad #cbias

So, I’ve done my best to bring the pumpkin patch and apple orchard home.

    On the kitchen table…

… as well as on the hearth and mantel.

Our main TV is above the fireplace, so I like to keep my mantel simple after learning the hard way that too much decor can get in the way of changing the channel!

At the moment, the TV cabinet door is open and the mantel is covered with Star Wars characters because my son spent the weekend playing his new Disney Infinity 3.0 game. Yoda and Han and Chewbacca kinda go with our fall color scheme! And Han is wearing boots and a vest. Very fallish.

But Darth Vader is another story all together! That black cape and boots are much more suited to winter.

We interrupt real life for another decorating fantasy…

Fresh apples, nestled in a basket…

Pumpkins and gourds, a mix of faux and real, scattered along the hearth…

    A bouquet of dried hydrangeas…

And leaves scattered all over the place.

Fill a mug or a Thermos with chai tea latte to knock the chill off on fall days. #ad #donthesitaste

Here, have a mug of spiked chai tea latte or a bite of caramel machiatto apples.

Whip up a quick homemade caramel sauce, using this easy recipe, then drizzle it on everything. My favorites are these Caramel Macchiato Apple Bites, topped with crushed nuts and pretzels. The perfect salty and sweet combo.

Have I convinced you we’re back at the pumpkin patch?

See how 8 bloggers transformed the same wooden pumpkin in very different ways. I love this vintage-look pumpkin patch sign with a crackle finish.

It all started with this handpainted pumpkin patch sign…

And there you go… pumpkins everywhere!

I couldn’t resist throwing in one shiny pumpkin, a nod to the metallic fall vibe I have going on elsewhere in the house.

How to decorate a mantel using traditional fall colors and natural elements.

You can see more of my nontraditional fall decorating in the dining room.

Who says you have to go traditional with your season decor. I love decorating with metallics, so I combined them with blues and grays and even purple to create this fall tablescape.

Or just step out on the front porch…

A lovely fall wreath featuring painted, gilded pumpkins on a grapevine form. I love the nontraditional colors of aqua and lavender.

… where everything is gilded or galvanized…

As much as I love the colors of autumn, it's refreshing to see fall front porch decor that embraces a completely different color palette. What a beautiful use of aqua, green, purple with neutrals.

… and colors you totally weren’t expecting for fall.

Don’t forget to visit the other Falling for Fall bloggers to see how they’re decorating for the season.
