This recipe makes 24 wonton single-serving appetizers. Prep time is minimal — just 10 minutes.

Buffalo Chicken Wonton Cups cook in 15 minutes. They’re best served straight ouf the oven, but certain parts of the recipe can be prepped ahead of time.

Want to see a brief overview of the process before diving into the recipe? Watch my web story on how to make Buffalo Chicken Dip Wontons.

🥘 Ingredients for Buffalo Chicken Wontons

chicken, shredded cheese, wonton wrappers, cream cheese, spices, sour crem and hot sauce
    • Wonton wrappers – You can find these in the produce section of your grocery store, near the tofu and international foods. If they’re not available, use eggroll wrappers cut into quarters.
    • Olive oil – Just a little bit of oil will help the wonton cups crisp up in the oven.
    • Cream cheese – For the best results and a creamy filling, use full-fat cream cheese or Neufchatel cheese.
    • Sour cream – Adds tanginess and lightens the filling slightly.
    • Buffalo sauce – Adds spice and the distinctive flavor to the Buffalo chicken filling. I recommend Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Sauce.
    • Garlic powder – This spice really amps up the flavor of the filling.
    • Shredded chicken – I use shredded rotisserie chicken but any kind of cooked chicken or canned chicken will work.
    • Shredded mozzarella cheese – This cheese is creamy and melts really well. You could also use cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack cheese or, for added spice, pepper jack cheese.
    • Blue cheese crumbles – Use as an optional garnish when serving.
    • Green onion – Use sliced green onions as an optional garnish when serving.
    • Celery – Use celery stalks or chopped celery as a garnish.
    • Ranch or blue cheese salad dressing – Thes two dressings are usually served with Buffalo chicken wings, so I recommend serving them as a dipping sauce with the appetizer cups.

    See recipe card for quantities.

🔪 How to Make Buffalo Chicken Wonton Cups

step by step photos of how to make spicy chicken appetizer cups
    1. Preheat the oven to 375℉ and grease a mini-muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray.
    2. Lightly brush each wonton wrapper with olive oil and place one wrapper into each well of the muffin pan.
    3. In a medium bowl, mix together the cream cheese, sour cream, buffalo sauce, and garlic powder.
    4. Mix in the shredded chicken and mozzarella cheese.
    5. Divide the buffalo chicken mixture between the wonton cups, filling each one with about 1 tablespoon.
    6. Bake the wonton cups for 12-15 minutes, or until the wontons are crisp and golden brown and the filling is warmed through.
    7. Serve the wonton cups immediately, garnished with blue cheese crumbles or sliced green onion, if desired. Serve with Ranch or blue cheese dipping sauce.

    💭  Top tip

If you want the wonton cups to be a little more sturdy or to have some extra crunch, use two wonton wrappers per cup instead of just one!

    Storage

These wonton cups are best enjoyed immediately. I do not recommend storing them for later consumption as the wonton cups will become soggy from the filling.

However, the recipe can be prepped ahead of time and prepared in stages.

How to Prep Ahead of Time

If you need to prep the recipe in advance, you can mix up the filling and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake the wonton cups.

You also may find it helpful to par bake, or partially bake, the wonton cups before filling them. This can be done ahead of time.

To par bake the wontons, reduce the oven temperature to 350 ℉ and bake the empty shells for 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the par baked wonton cups from the oven when they’re crispy, but not browned. Store the wonton cups in an airtight container until you’re ready to fill them.

Click here for more filling ideas and tips on how to make wonton cups for appetizers.

When you’re ready to serve the Buffalo Chicken Dip Wontons, return the par-baked cups to the muffin pan.

Add the filling and bake at 350℉ for 7 to 10 minutes, until the filling is cooked and the wonton cups are golden and crispy.

    📖 Variations & Substitutions

    • If you can’t find wonton wrappers at the grocery store, you can cut egg roll wrappers into quarters.
    • If you don’t have any sour cream on hand, just use 8 ounces of cream cheese. The Buffalo chicken filling will be thicker but just as tasty.
    • I like using rotisserie chicken for this recipe. But you can also use canned chicken, grilled chicken or any other cooked chicken. Instant Pot shredded chicken would work well in this recipe.
