To Make chicken salad wonton cups, You Will Need:
- Wonton wrappers – Find these in the produce section of your grocery store, near the tofu and egg roll wrappers. Sometimes, you can also find them in the freezer section with Asian food.
- Chicken salad – I highly recommend making my easy 3-ingredient chicken salad recipe to use in this wonton appetizer. But you can use any kind of chicken salad you prefer.
- Leaf lettuce – Use romaine or another lettuce with some crunch.
- Grape or cherry tomatoes – These add a splash of color to the appetizer.
- Muffin pan – I prefer using a regular size muffin tin instead of a mini sized ones to make the wonton cups.
- Wooden tart tamper – This tool comes in handy when pressing the unbaked wontons into the muffin cups.

Variations
These chicken salad wonton appetizers are endlessly customizable. There are so many different variations you can make, using different types of chicken salad, garnishes and additions.
Some ideas:
- Add a little sweet heat kick to the chicken salad wonton cups by garnishing with candied jalapenos instead of tomato slices.
- Fill the wonton cups with curry chicken salad.
- Prepare a Chinese chicken salad or Thai chicken salad to go in the wonton cups and garnish with chow mein noodles or fried wonton strips.
- Serve with grape chicken salad and granish with red grape slices instead of tomatoes.
- Prepare a buffalo chicken salad and garnish with pickled jalapeno slices. Or fill the wonton cups with this Buffalo Chicken Dip from Major Hoff Takes a Wife.
Tips
If you want to make the baked wonton cups ahead of time, simply cook them and allow to cool before placing them in an air tight container. They should remain crispy and fresh for several days.
You can also make the chicken salad a day or two ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Just make sure to stir it well before adding it to the wonton cups, as some of the liquid may separate.
When assembling the wonton cup appetizers, I like to place a washed, dried lettuce leaf in the bottom of each one before adding the chicken salad.
This help prevent the wonton cups from getting soggy. Plus, we love the crunch of lettuce with the chicken salad and tomato slices. It’s like a bite-sized chicken salad sandwich.
