chicken salad wonton cups with lettuce and tomato on a wooden board

Looking for an easy and delicious make-ahead appetizer? Chicken salad wonton cups are a crowd pleaser, and the ingredients can be prepped ahead of time. The appetizer takes only minutes to put together.

Chicken salad wonton cups are a quick, delicious and easy bite-sized appetizer.

chicken salad wonton cups with lettuce and tomato on a wooden board

You can prep the wonton cups and homemade chicken salad ahead of time, then put everything together just before you’re ready to serve them.

Wonton wrappers are my favorite shortcut ingredient to have on hand for entertaining. You can make hundreds of different appetizers using wonton wrappers. These are just some of our favorites: fried pork wontons (or try this air fryer version), apple butter cream cheese wontons and pepper jelly cream cheese wontons.

Be sure to check out this post for all my tips on how to make wonton cups.

To make these wonton appetizers, you’ll need my recipe for easy chicken salad recipe using canned chicken. Or you can use store bought chicken salad or your favorite recipe.

To Make chicken salad wonton cups, You Will Need:

    • Wonton wrappers  – Find these in the produce section of your grocery store, near the tofu and egg roll wrappers. Sometimes, you can also find them in the freezer section with Asian food.
    • Chicken salad – I highly recommend making my easy 3-ingredient chicken salad recipe to use in this wonton appetizer. But you can use any kind of chicken salad you prefer.
    • Leaf lettuce  – Use romaine or another lettuce with some crunch.
    • Grape or cherry tomatoes  – These add a splash of color to the appetizer.
    • Muffin pan – I prefer using a regular size muffin tin instead of a mini sized ones to make the wonton cups.
    • Wooden tart tamper – This tool comes in handy when pressing the unbaked wontons into the muffin cups.

How to Make Chicken Wonton Cups

    1. Prepare the chicken salad and refrigerate until you’re ready to fill the wonton cups.
    2. Gently press a wonton wrapper in each muffin cup using a wooden tart tamper.unbaked wonton cups in a muffin pan
    3. Bake in a preheated oven until lightly golden brown.
    4. Allow wonton cups to cool and remove from the muffin pan.
    5. Wash the lettuce and allow it dry, before cutting or tearing it into small pieces. Wash and slice the tomatoes.
    6. When ready to serve, place a lettuce leaf in each baked wonton cup, fill with chicken salad and garnish with a tomato slice.chicken salad garnished with a tomato slice on a bed of lettuce in a wonton cup
    7. Serve immediately.

    Variations

These chicken salad wonton appetizers are endlessly customizable. There are so many different variations you can make, using different types of chicken salad, garnishes and additions.

    Some ideas:

    • Add a little sweet heat kick to the chicken salad wonton cups by garnishing with candied jalapenos instead of tomato slices.
    • Fill the wonton cups with curry chicken salad.
    • Prepare a Chinese chicken salad or Thai chicken salad to go in the wonton cups and garnish with chow mein noodles or fried wonton strips.
    • Serve with grape chicken salad and granish with red grape slices instead of tomatoes.
    • Prepare a buffalo chicken salad and garnish with pickled jalapeno slices. Or fill the wonton cups with this Buffalo Chicken Dip from Major Hoff Takes a Wife.

    Tips

If you want to make the baked wonton cups ahead of time, simply cook them and allow to cool before placing them in an air tight container. They should remain crispy and fresh for several days.

You can also make the chicken salad a day or two ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Just make sure to stir it well before adding it to the wonton cups, as some of the liquid may separate.

When assembling the wonton cup appetizers, I like to place a washed, dried lettuce leaf in the bottom of each one before adding the chicken salad.

This help prevent the wonton cups from getting soggy. Plus, we love the crunch of lettuce with the chicken salad and tomato slices. It’s like a bite-sized chicken salad sandwich.
