How to Covert Cooking Times for An Air Fryer
While you might think that you can just air fry foods at the same temperature you would bake them in a conventional oven, that’s usually a recipe for overcooked food.
I always have to remind my husband of this when he’s making frozen french fries or chicken tenders in our air fryer — although some companies now include air fryer cooking instructions on their packaging.
Air fryers work like convection ovens by allowing warm air to flow around the food. So, they cook more quickly than a conventional oven.
To covert a recipe for the air fryer, reduce the temperature by 25°F and reduce the cooking time by about 20 percent. The first time you convert a recipe for the air fryer, it’s a good idea to check it frequently for doneness and flip the food so it browns and crisps on all sides.
Do All Air Fryers Cook the Same?
While the cooking temperature should be consistent on air fryers, some brands and models are larger and more powerful than others and may cook more quickly.
Until you learn how your air fryer cooks, it’s always a good idea to check on food periodically for doneness.
If you plan to do a lot of air fryer cooking, I recommend buying a countertop air fryer that includes a temperature probe, like the Ninja Foodi 5-in-1, the Ninja Foodi Smart XL 6-in-1 or the NuWave Bravo XL Convection Oven Air Fryer.
This will help ensure that you cook things like poultry, beef and pork to safe temperatures. It will also help you make sure your burgers and steaks are cooked how you like them, whether that’s rare or well done.
I have a small air fryer with a basket and the Ninja Foodi 5-in-1. I find that the Ninja Foodi air fryer cooks more quickly and crispier than my smaller air fryer.
Common Air Fryer Cooking Times
For best results, cook chicken wings in a single layer in an air fryer. The exact time will depend on the recipe you’re using, the cooking temperature and also the type of air fryer you’re using.
Plan on anywhere from 14 to 30 minutes to cook chicken wings in an air fryer. Variations in cooking time depend on whether the whether the wings been previously cooked or are raw. (If you’re cooking frozen wings, you’ll need to add more time, usually about 5 minutes.)
Most recipes call for flipping chicken wings halfway through. If you want the wings to be crispy, raise the cooking temperature 10 degrees for the last five minutes.
Always check to see that wings are fully cooked to at least 165 degrees F before serving them. Use a meat thermometer to be safe.
