Questions about Air Fryers & Air Fryer Cooking

Do you have questions about air fryers and cooking in an air fryer? Leave your questions in the comment section, and I’ll be sure to answer them.

    Are air fryers healthy?

Cooking in an air fryer is much healthier than frying. And for foods that are supposed to be crispy, I prefer using the air fryer to the microwave, oven or toaster oven. We love making things like French fries, tater tots and spring rolls in the air fryer.

It’s also my go-to choice when I need to reheat foods like fried wontons, squash chips or grit fries. They don’t lose their crispness like they do with other reheating methods. I’ve even reheated thin-crust pizza in an air fryer. The crust comes out crispy and delicious, instead of soggy.

What size air fryer do I need?

The answer to this questions largely depends on the types of foods you’ll be cooking and the number of people you are cooking for.

Unless you’re just cooking for one or two people, I recommend getting a larger capacity air fryer, something in the 5- to 6-quart range. An air fryer this size will give you a lot of versatility in terms of the quantity and types of food you can cook in it. For reference, you can roast a whole chicken in an air fryer that is 5.3 quarts or larger.

If you have a larger family or plan to use the air fryer to cook larger cuts of meat, you might want to invest in an extra-large model like this one that that come with rotisserie accessories.

What can you do with an air fryer?

An air fryer is basically a convection oven, so you can cook all kinds of things in it that you would cook in a conventional oven or a deep fryer. This includes desserts, entrees, side dishes, vegetables and appetizers like air fryer chicken wings.

Air fryers are great for preparing foods that are traditionally fried in a more healthful manner. Just toss the food in the air fryer basket with a tiny bit of oil or cooking spray, set the temperature and timer and wait for the bell to ding. (It is helpful to shake or toss food in an air fryer to ensure even cooking and crisping.)

Lots of people who are trying to eat healthier or lose weight swear by their air fryers because it allows them to enjoy their favorite foods without all the fat and calories..

You’ll be amazed at how crispy foods get when cooked in an air fryer versus a regular oven, microwave of toaster oven.

An air fryer is great for reheating fried foods, You also can cook frozen french fries, chicken nuggets, spring rolls and egg rolls in it. They come out crispy and delicious.

But don’t think an air fryer is only useful for reheating or cooking frozen foods. You can straight-up cook in an air fryer — everything from appetizers, side dishes, entrees and desserts.

Can you air fry without oil?

While some air fryer recipes may call for a scant amount of oil (usually a teaspoon) or cooking spray for crisping, many foods can be prepared in an air fryer without oil.

This makes air frying an excellent cooking method if you’re trying to lose weight, cut calories and fat or reduce cholesterol. Air fryers enable you too cook many foods that are typically deep fried without sacrificing taste or crispness.

Can you bake in an air fryer?

Don’t let the name “air fryer” make you think this appliance can only be used for “frying.”

Yes, you can bake in an air fryer. You can make cakes and cookies, and you can also bake things like chicken and vegetables, too. An air fryer is essentially a smaller version of a convention oven. So anything you can cook in a convection oven or a regular oven, you can prepare in an air fryer.

Can you use ramekins in an air fryer?

Looking to make mini air fryer desserts or personal-sized chicken pot pies? You can definitely use ramekins, small glass jars or other oven-proof baking cups in an air fryer. The size of your air fryer will limit the number of ramekins you can fit inside it though, so you may have to prepare some recipes in batches.
