It all started with that blue rug. As soon as I bought it for our family room, the hunt was on for more furnishings and accessories in serene shades of blue, gray and white.
The rug begat a collection of blue-and-white ginger jars, vases and pottery, mostly thrifted.
It inspired me to create inexpensive artwork from marbled paper.
Why stop there? Why not add some throw pillows, blankets and animal print fabric in blue and gray.
Next up — a makeover for our scratched coffee table. And I’m also seriously thinking about painting the walls. Decorating is definitely a never-ending evolution! But it’s certainly fun.
In between the big room makeovers, I really enjoy styling the different rooms in our home for the seasons and holidays. For fall, I added a few jewel tones and pops of my signature aqua, keeping things a bit more subdued than last year.
I’d love to take you on a tour of the space and share my fall family room and mantel decor ideas.
I am loving this chalkboard art I made for our hearth using products from A Maker’s Studio. It looks so pretty surrounded by aqua, blue and white pumpkins. (You can shop for all the supplies for this project in my A Maker’s Studio store.)
I always struggle a bit decorating our fireplace for fall because we have a massive stone hearth and mantel with a TV cabinet above. I have to be careful with anything that obstructs our view of the TV or our use of the remote!
This year, I filled the hearth my favorite Park Hill lanterns, some blue-and-white ginger jars and lots of pumpkins in nontraditional colors.
Since we do have a TV above our fireplace, I like to keep my mantel decor ideas fairly simple. I used a simple fall pumpkin floral garland on the mantel with two tall mercury glass candlesticks at each end. When the TV is not in use, I like having this faux tin ceiling tile artwork in the center.
You can find out how I made the artwork here.
Just a few more details to show you over on the antique empire sideboard, one of my favorite estate sale finds ever.
My mom told me I had enough blue-and-white pottery when I picked up another piece at a yard sale over the weekend. But can you ever have enough ginger jars or chinoiserie?
That’s like saying you can have too many velvet pumpkins.
Or too many blue and gold ceramic pumpkins.
Which I definitely do not have too many of because my Target only had two left in Bullseye’s Playground.
Besides, now that I’m using more blue and white in my decorating, I finally have a place to display the Chinese mother-and-son porcelain figurines my brother brought back from China years ago.
They are so sweet and delicate.
