I said it so matter-of-factly, in much the same tone I would tell him what we’re having for dinner.
“Are you serious?” he asked, his brow knit, his tone cautious — a man carefully feeling out his wife’s mood and true intentions before voicing his own opinion.
I wasn’t — really. But I do like the idea of the country life on a horse farm, those pastoral scenes you see in magazines. Stables and steeplechases and mud-crusted boots outside the backdoor.

I also happen to love equestrian style decorating. I have plans to bring more of it into our keeping room. With its cozy proportions, large stone fireplace and dark furnishings, including my antique empire-style sideboard, it has the right bones for this traditional yet casual style.
So today, on the eve of the Belmont Stakes, — (Will California Chrome become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years?) — I’m sharing some of my favorite equestrian style decorating and fashion inspiration.
Though I was never one of those girls who was horse crazy, I find that I already own quite a few equestrian style objects that will help me create the look and mood I’m hoping to create in our family’s main gathering space.
Like this vintage shadowbox from the French Laundry Home warehouse sale, reproduction trophies and old books. I also have a collection of julep cups and a few horseshoes and ribbons that I can use in vignettes around the room.
These harness leather pillows from Rachel Ray Designs would go a long way to adding equestrian style to our sofa.
I love the story behind Rebecca Ray Designs. It’s steeped in history, craftsmanship and reverence for the past.
Company founder Rebecca Yuhasz Smith is an accomplished equestrian who lives in the picturesque village of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, where horse harness making has been the local industry for 200 years. Her company is helping to preserve that industry.
Artisans use centuries-old techniques to create the handbags, jewelry and accessories offered by Rebecca Ray Designs. Each item is bench made, which means a single artist works on it from start to finish, combining leather, canvas, authentic hardware and other materials into gorgeous designs.
Wouldn’t a Burghley Tote or a Maryann Duffel look nice propped beside my chair or sofa in the keeping room?

I may not get the horse farm I dream of, but I can certainly bring equestrian style to our home.
And since our backyard backs up to a horse farm, I still have that prized view and pastoral feel, but without having to do all the work of taking care of horses or a farm. My kind of living…

I think we all like to dream but I sure don’t want the work of a farm! Great post, Amy!
