Equestrian Style Decorating & Fashion Inspiration

Whether you live on a horse farm or just dream of it, you’ll love these equestrian style decorating ideas.“I think we need a horse farm,” I said to my husband one day as we were out driving in the country, through rolling hills and past fields and barns and other picturesque scenes.

I said it so matter-of-factly, in much the same tone I would tell him what we’re having for dinner.

“Are you serious?” he asked, his brow knit, his tone cautious — a man carefully feeling out his wife’s mood and true intentions before voicing his own opinion.

I wasn’t — really. But I do like the idea of the country life on a horse farm, those pastoral scenes you see in magazines. Stables and steeplechases and mud-crusted boots outside the backdoor.

I also happen to love equestrian style decorating. I have plans to bring more of it into our keeping room. With its cozy proportions, large stone fireplace and dark furnishings, including my antique empire-style sideboard, it has the right bones for this traditional yet casual style.

So today, on the eve of the Belmont Stakes, — (Will California Chrome become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years?) — I’m sharing some of my favorite equestrian style decorating and fashion inspiration.

Though I was never one of those girls who was horse crazy, I find that I already own quite a few equestrian style objects that will help me create the look and mood I’m hoping to create in our family’s main gathering space.

Like this vintage shadowbox from the French Laundry Home warehouse sale, reproduction trophies and old books. I also have a collection of julep cups and a few horseshoes and ribbons that I can use in vignettes around the room.
