Wonton envelopes filled with jam and fried to a golden crisp are an easy party appetizer for an awards-show viewing party or black tie event.
When I write the story of my life, I want Reese Witherspoon to play me in the movie. And I’m definitely planning to walk the Red Carpet when that movie is nominated for an Oscar.
I might not ever make it to the Academy Awards, but I do love watching the spectacle and celebrating the glitz and glamour of Oscar night at home.
These jam-filled wonton envelopes are the perfect easy party appetizer for an Oscars bash.
You can make these ahead of time, which is always a good thing when you’re throwing a party. Because who wants to be standing in front of the stove frying in stilettos and sequins?
To make these, start out with square wonton wrappers. It helps to keep them moist by placing them inside a damp paper towels, so they remain pliable as you’re folding them.
To fold the envelopes. place a wonton wrapper on a lined baking sheet so that it is oriented as a diamond instead of a square.
Fold the two side points to the middle, then fold up the bottom point to the middle, as shown above.
At this point, it’s helpful to dip your index finger in water and press along the seams of the wonton envelope to seal it so no jam leaks out during frying.
Finally, fold the bottom point of the envelope under the flap, pressing to secure.
I found it helpful to let the wonton envelopes dry slightly before filling them. Open gently and spoon in a teaspoon of strawberry jam, at the most.
Seal the envelope by folding down the top flap. Again, it helps to run a wet finger around the top edge of the envelope to help the wonton wrapper dough stick together. Press to secure.
The final step is to fry the filled jam-filled wonton wrappers in vegetable oil until golden brown. Heat the oil over a medium-high burner and add the wonton envelopes, being careful not to crowd the pan. Fry until golden brown, then drain on paper towels.
Serve dusted with powdered sugar.
One note about this easy party appetizer recipe: I definitely recommend folding the envelopes and then filling them with jam.
I tried adding the jam to the wonton wrapper before folding, and it made it much harder to seal them. They were much more prone to leakage during frying.
If the idea of filling the wonton envelopes is too much for you, don’t fret. Just fold the wrappers into an envelope shape, fry, dust with powdered sugar and serve the jam on the side.
I think I deserve an award for these sweet snacks!
