DIY Carbonated Clay Bubble Mask

Pamper your skin with a DIY carbonated clay mask that bubbles and fizzes when you apply it. The bentonite clay in this foaming DIY face mask absorbs excess oil, while the other ingredients target acne, clogged pores and dark spots.

While I don’t get to the spa often, I love a making my own homemade beauty products like DIY eye cream, shaving cream, coconut oil lotion, strawberry-flavored lip balm, healing hand salve and sensual salt scrub. This bubbling DIY face mask is a make-at-home version of those popular K-beauty bubble face masks.

This version comes in powdered form, and the homemade face mask starts bubbling when you add liquid to it — in this case, soothing lavender hydrosol. It bubbles for just a bit as you apply it to your face, then you allow it to sit on your face and dry before washing it off with a warm, wet cloth. (I recommend a makeup removing cloth so you don’t stain your washcloths.)

The bubbles in this DIY carbonated clay mask aren’t as big or as aggressive as the ones in the K-beauty bubble face masks you can buy. But that doesn’t mean it’s not doing good things for your skin.

The bentonite clay in the mask helps absorb excess oil and draws out impurities, like blackheads. After applying the mask, you pores may also appear smaller and your skin may look and feel tighter.

Citric acid, which in combination with the baking soda and lavender hydrosol produces the bubbles, is an alpha hydroxy acid. It can be helpful in dealing with clogged pores, mild acne, wrinkles and dark spots.

The lavender hydrosol, or essential water, is soothing and calming. Lavender has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and ant-aging properties. It’s good for acne and reducing redness. Lavender is extremely gentle, which makes it a good choice for sensitive skin.

However, if you have sensitive skin, you should test this mask first before applying as the bentonite clay and citric acid can be mildly irritating.

Supplies for a DIY Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask

• 6 Tablespoons bentonite clay
• 1.5 teaspoons citric acid
• 3 teaspoons baking soda
• lavender hydrosol

How to Make a DIY Fizzy Clay Mask

Combine the bentonite clay, citric acid and baking soda in a plastic jar and stir or shake to combine.

When you’re ready to apply the DIY face mask, scoop out 2 Tablespoons into a bowl and add 2 Tablespoons of lavender hydrosol.

The bubbles will start forming as soon as you add the liquid, so mix quickly and apply to wet clay to your face.

Allow the clay to harden on your face for 5 to 15 minutes, then rinse off with a warm cloth and behold your beautiful skin.
