Decorating, Holiday & Seasonal, Patriotic Decor, Summer Decor

Mix classic blue and white pieces pottery, Blue Willow china with touches of red to create pretty 4th of July table decorations. I also share some tips for creating high-low tablescapes by combining items you already own with thrift store finds and inexpensive seasonal pieces.

We’re planning on a lazy Independence Day at home, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t in the festive spirit. I set out some pretty 4th of July table decorations, mixing classic china patterns with inexpensive seasonal items and things from my Christmas stash.

Yep, you read that right. I use Christmas decor in July! I find that many red, white, brass and vintage items can also create an Americana vibe for July 4th.

To create these pretty fourth of July table decorations, I hauled out my thrifted Blue Willow china and some classic blue and white chinoiserie pieces, as well as some everyday Better Homes & Gardens red dishes I’ve had forever.

While it may be tempting to buy new china for every holiday, most of us don’t have the budget or storage for that. So I like to mix and match what I already have with a few carefully chosen accent pieces from places like Bullesye’s Playground at Target, the Dollar Tree or the Christmas Tree Shops.

To create this patriotic tablescape, I started with some blue and red plaid placemats, topped with braided round straw chargers. (Mine were from a yard sale, but I’ve linked to some similar ones.)

Since I went with a mix-and-match pattern with the dishes, I also mixed up the napkins. Red cloth napkins on the blue and white plates and indigo blue buffet napkins on the red plates.

I finished each patriotic place setting with a mini burlap flag and some inexpensive bowls  I purchased on clearance a few years ago from The Christmas Tree shops.

I love that the bowls have different designs, as well. Who says 4th of July table decorations have to be matchy-matchy?

For the centerpiece, I filled a blue and white chinoiserie Double Happiness jar with some realistic faux white tulips and vintage-style mini flags.

The ribbon wrapped balls are a project I did for Farmhouse Style Magazine. You can find the tutorial in the Summer issue.

I added a few more blue and white porcelain pottery pieces to the center of the table. Blue and red star paper straws and a patriotic pinwheel garden stake from Dollar Tree add a touch of whimsy.

And for a final patriotic touch, I used these brass bell place card holders at each place setting. Mine were from the Hearth & Hard Christmas collection at Target, but you can find similar brass bells here.
