Superhero Party Ideas — The Avengers: Age of Ultron

What do you do when an indestructible, rogue robot with artificial intelligence is out to destroy the world?

You throw an out-of-this-world, end-of-the-world party and invite a bunch of superheroes over!

We’re getting excited for the upcoming release of MARVEL’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters May 1.

So, we decided to invite some friends over for a superhero movie marathon and snacks inspired by the Avengers.

That Cap is a real heartthrob. All the ladies love him!

Welcome to Ultron’s lab, where he’s plotting to destroy humanity…

…unless the Avengers can stop him.

The party scene was straight out of an old Avengers comic book.

Ultron is in his lab, standing before a bank of computer screens filled with schematic drawings, while the heroes are being held captive in some sort of torturous holding tanks.

I cut down foam board and edged it with silver duct tape to create Ultron’s computers. The text is an old-school computer font called VCR: OSD Mono. I printed the messages out, then traced them onto 12X12 sheets of paper in Sharpie marker and glued them to the foam board.

This is totally the kind of project you cna do while watching TV (or one of the MARVEL movies featuring the Avengers: Iron Man 1, 2, and 3; Captain America 1 and; 2, Thor 1 and 2, The Incredible Hulk, and MARVEL’S The Avengers.)

Ultron has already captured some of our heroes. Hulk doesn’t look happy about being caged in this metal milk crate!

And Iron Man and Thor are suspended in capsules inside Ultron’s lab.

Looks like they need J.A.R.V.I.S. and Mjölnir to help them escape!

As you can probably tell, I used empty soda bottles to make these plastic cells for our heroes.

I just spray painted some empty 16-ounce Dr. Pepper bottles in my lab workshop. I added slits in the back of the bottles that were large enough to fit the toy action figures, then suspended them using fishing line. To mimic the look of wires and plastic tubing, I used silly straws to connect the bottles.

This is totally a kid-friendly arts and crafts project. And you’ll get a kick out of watching the kids try to figure out how you got the action figures into the soda bottles!

One the DIY party decorations were made, it was time to focus on the food. Of course, I had to stock up on these Avengers specially marked snacks at Walmart. Be sure to download the Super Heroes Assemble app from iTunes or the Google Play store to unlock exclusive movie content. Plus, be sure to scan the Avengers displays at Walmart and Walmart.com to for some cool interactive features.

With the basics out of the way, I was able to focus on making snacks to reflect each of the Avengers.

I served Doritos with homemade Iron Man Chili Cheese Dip.

Hulk like!

For the Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, I made some Dr. Pepper Cherry JELL-O cups. (Follow the package directions to make the JELL-O, but substitute Dr. Pepper Cherry for the water. When set, top with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. For the finishing touch, add a spider sticker to each serving spoon.)

They were a hit!

For Hawkeye, we had cupcakes with purple icing and topped with arrows made from paper straws and silver glitter duct tape.

I topped popcorn with green M&Ms and served them in cups decorated with Hulk vinyl stickers, which I made with my Silhouette cutting machine.

I used red and green M&M’s, vanilla wafers and white chocolate candy melts, to make Captain America’s mighty shield. (To make them, preheat your oven to 300 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange vanilla wafers, curved side down on the parchment and top each one with a white chocolate candy wafer. Heat for 3-5 minutes, until white chocolate begins to melt. Remove from oven and place an M&M in the center of each cookie, pressing down slightly. Cool and serve.)

To make Thor’s hammer, I cut homemade rice cereal bars into rectangles and added popsicle stick handles.

These Avengers Cheez-Its crackers were also a big hit. I served them in a plastic beaker to play into the whole lab theme.

Judging from their smiling faces and empty plates, I think the party guests liked the snacks!

You can’t have a kids’ party without fun and games.

We had plenty of options: movies, video games, masks and The Avengers toys.

But the real smash of the party was this DIY Hulk Smash game.

It was really easy to make. I put a small prize inside foam bowls, then covered each one with a green napkin. (You could also use tissue paper.) I glued the bowls to a piece of foam board, which you’ll find in the school supplies section at Walmart.

We lined the kids up, youngest to oldest, and gave each one a chance to smash through one of the bowls.

Of course, they had to wear Hulk gloves to do it.

These heroes didn’t leave anything behind!
