You never know where inspiration will come from.

When it came time to work on my fall fireplace mantel decor, I found my muse in this jewel-toned plaid blanket scarf. It includes pops of aqua, indigo, purple and maroon and works well with the new color scheme in our keeping room.

I’m excited to be sharing the jewel-toned fireplace mantel decor as part of the Fall Ideas Tour featuring 25 talented bloggers.

Every day this week, we are showcasing new fall decorating ideas, crafts and free printables. Today, the tour kicks off with fall mantels. You can check out all the projects using the links at the end of this post.

While the rest of the world is on a neutral farmhouse kick, I’ve been adding color to our home rather than subtracting it. You can see a sneak peek of our new indigo ikat rug and sofa in the keeping room. But you’ll have to come back later for my fall home tour to see the rest of the changes to this room!)
I love combining color with rustic and vintage elements and mixing in texture and metallics.

Did you catch the pop of copper on the aqua stoneware pumpkin from JoAnn or the mini version I painted?
Because we have a TV cabinet above our fireplace, I tend to keep our mantel décor fairly simple. In the past, I have styled the mantel just for photos, but now I’m all about keeping it real. We can’t be bothered to take down wreaths and move fussy décor out of the way when it’s time to binge watch Netflix. (My latest obsession? Gossip Girl. XOXO.)

So there’s just a simple garland on the mantel, with some lanterns and a chippy post flanking each side.

And sometimes, even that gets in the way of TV time! I wish I had snapped a photo of the mantel later this same day. My son and his buddy knocked down the garland when they opened the cabinet to play video games. I fixed it without fussing, but I really wish they hadn’t woken me up from my afternoon nap to tell me about it! All to say, our real life is rarely never picture perfect.
That pretty pumpkin and eucalyptus leaf garland, by the way, is from Michael’s.

While my mantel decorating space may be limited, I have plenty of room to go overboard on the hearth!
Since it’s not cold enough yet to light our gas logs, I propped an old wooden firebox cover in front of the fireplace and hung a dried lavender bundle from it. (The wood cover was dirty and rusty, but it was free!)

I love how the wood tones coordinate with my oversized European wooden bowl from the French Farmer’s Wife, my favorite local barn sale.

I loaded the bowl up with lots of faux pumpkins, a driftwood garland and florals in colors to match the scarf.

Every year, I add to my faux pumpkin collection. However, I find that a lot of the fakes aren’t very realistic looking. So, I often paint them, layering on different colors, glazes and waxes to get the look I want. It takes a bit of time, but it ends up being cheaper than buying expensive fakes or a crop of real pumpkins from the farmer’s market.

The gray boxes were another freebie from a friend, and the aqua spindle was from a neighbor’s yard sale. I didn’t even have to paint it!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at our jewel-toned fall fireplace mantel decor.
