Whimsical Vintage Christmas Porch Tour

Deck the halls, inside and out, with greens, lights and holiday finery. Tour my whimsical Christmas porch, plus 13 other festive porches, patios and sunrooms.

This year, more than ever, we’re spending time visiting with our friends, family and neighbors outdoors. Our Christmas porch is festooned with lights, greenery, bows, holiday signs and vintage treasures that lets us share the joy and spirit of the season from a distance.

I’m excited to share my annual Christmas porch tour with you this year. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season!

This year, 13 friends are joining me. They’ve gone all out in decorating their porches — big and small — as well as sunrooms, patios, decks, and screened-in porches for Christmas. You’re sure to find some ideas to use at your own home, no matter where you live. You can visit all the participants in this year’s tour at the end of this post.

This year, I really tried to stick with my use-what-you-have approach to decorating since we’re mostly staying home.

A few flocked picks (used in the swag) and a pair of white outdoor trees were the only new additions to our Christmas porch decorations this year. Everything else is from the attic!

We also used a lot more lights, wrapping the porch columns and railing with them. (Our whole cul-de-sac is going all Griswold with Christmas lights this year, and I’m loving it!)

Even though we used a lot of the same decorative elements on the porch, it doesn’t look like a cookie cutter copy of years past. Don’t feel like you have to buy all new Christmas decorations every year to achieve a fresh look. Challenge yourself to use what you have in creative new ways!

Let’s get on with this year’s tour!

I rolled out my favorite red-and-white plaid rug in front of black buffet I painted for the porch. (The paint job has held up remarkably well these last 5 years, but I probably will repaint it this spring.)

To dress up the top of the cabinet, I used the Santa’s Little Helper sign I painted for the porch last year, along with some other Christmas signs, vintage ornaments and a metal star I already had. My son gave it a fresh coat of green spray paint for Christmas.

While there are a few store-bought items on the buffet, most things are from yard sales, thrift stores, antique markets or local artists.

I hunt for Christmas items all year long. Prices are always better in the off-season, so be sure to check out those after-Christmas sales and look for holiday-themed items in the spring and summer at yard sales and thrift stores.

I’m pretty sure I found the plaid hat box, ice skates and Allsorts bin off season.

I’m collecting letters for Santa in this vintage-inspired post box. (He’s a personal friend of mine!) In years past, we have hosted visits with Santa on the porch.

A few other favorite elements on the Christmas porch: a tobacco stick star and my greenhouse made from old windows. Buckets of pine cones and holly and a DIY jingle bell swag made from dollar store supplies complete the vignette.

I kinda went crazy with the wreaths on the front porch this year. Why hang one wreath when you can use four?

For the front door, I went with our traditional evergreen wreath, decorated with a chalkboard and plaid bow I made. I like big bows and I cannot lie…

I couldn’t resist hanging this vintage French horn wreath I created as a project for Country Sampler Farmhouse Style magazine. It’s too heavy for our glass front door, but looks great hanging just to the left of the door on an iron hook.

Shop the Look

Most of my Christmas porch decorations are vintage, DIYed or retail purchases from past seasons, so you’re not likely to find them in stores this year. When possible, I’ve tried to include links to similar items so you can recreate the look.
