Happy Flag Day!
What better way to celebrate all things red, white and blue than with an all-American cookout and a patriotic-no-sew showcase with some of my favorite creative bloggers. (If you need me, I’ll be grilling out with my neighbors and stuffing my face with ribs this evening.)
For my project, I decided to make some patriotic denim and burlap placemats, which are perfect for a Flag Day cookout or a July 4th tablesetting.
I found some cool denim fabric fat quarters at Michael’s and some patriotic burlap ribbon at Walmart, and that’s what I used to make my placemats.
Iron each piece of denim well, then fold over each edge, about 1/2 inch, to create a seam. Miter the corners, on the short ends.
Use super-strength iron-on hem tape to secure the seams. Since the denim is thick, you may have to apply more heat and pressure than you would with lighter weight fabrics.
Next, cut a strip of printed burlap ribbon about 1 inch longer than the length of the placemat. Use two long strips of hem tape along the top and bottom edges of the burlap to secure it to the center of the placemat, as shown in the photo below.
Flip the placemat over, and fold over the edges of the burlap ribbon and secure with more hem tape. Since the burlap and denim are both thick fabrics, you may need to apply more heat and pressure to activate the iron-on tape. You could also use hot glue if you find the hem tape doesn’t work for you.
I used two packs of the denim fat quarters to make six placemats. (I bought rolls of burlap ribbon, a red-and-white-stripe and blue stars, and had plenty of both leftover after finishing my project.)
This red-and-blue one might be my favorite.

LOVE THIS!!!! Where did you get the paper plates?
Atta Girl Amy
I think the striped ones were from Dollar Tree. And the ones with the stars were just solid blue ones I bought. I cut vinyl stars using my Silhouette Cameo cutting machine and added the stars to the paper plates.
