Cabinet of Curiosities Halloween Mod Podge Craft

By now, you know I have an macabre fascination with Halloween.

So, when Mod Podge asked me to create a Halloween craft using its outdoor waterbase sealer, glue and finish, I couldn’t say no.

I decided to make a 3D Cabinet of Curiosities sign to showcase some macabre collections.

Because it’s sealed with outdoor Mod Podge, I hung the cabinet of curiosities beside the door. I think it looks like a sign outside of a strange shop. (Like maybe something out of Charmed or Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Stephen King’s Needful Things.)

This was such a fun project to make.

I started out with a plain wooden shadowbox and wood plaque from the craft store. I painted both a charcoal gray color. I didn’t even bother painting the interior of the shadowbox because I knew I would be decoupaging over it with spooky Halloween scrapbook papers.

I used the Halloween scrapbook paper like wallpaper in the back of the shadowbox. Just spread a thin layer of outdoor Mod Podge on the back, then place your paper in the shadowbox. Smooth to remove any air bubbles. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the top of the paper, as well, and let dry. Apply additional coats as necessary.

I also covered the plaque with scrapbook paper, then added the word “Curiosities,” which I cut out in a spooky font using my Silhouette die-cutting machine.

Next comes the really fun part: making the actual curiosities to display in the cabinet.

I created a scary amulet by decoupaging a spider on a frame locket.

And I turned two little bottles into potion vials by adding poison labels to them.

I used Mod Podge outdoor formula to glue the labels to the bottle and to seal them.

I filled the other compartments with plastic hand bones…

…and a tiny crow and some black-and-white game pieces.

I used eye hooks and a small chain to hang the curiosities sign from the cabinet.

Pretty spooky, huh?

I should mention that I sealed the entire cabinet with several coats of Mod Podge Outdoor since this is hanging outside, uncovered, on my back porch.
