Before long, winter will be a memory and planting season will be upon us.
So, it seemed like a perfect time to finally share with you the ins and outs and how tos of the DIY potting bench makeover I did last year for the Chic Chateau showhouse.
This was such a fun project, to recreate a piece of furniture for a new purpose.
I started out with this white yard sale cabinet, which probably was originally a changing table.
It had been badly painted — lots of drips and uneven coats. So I spent quite a bit of time sanding off the original finish before painting it myself.
While I did a fair amount of sanding to smooth the surface, to save time, I opted not to strip the original paint job. Instead, I gave it a rough base coat of green chalk paint. (I used Mardi Gras, an olive green, from Maison Blanche Paint.)
Next, I followed up with two coats of Sherwin-Williams flat latex paint in Indigo Batik, which was one of the main colors used in the showhouse.
I did a bit of distressing, just a little light sanding, so some of the green paint would show through. Then, I finished with several coats of poly to seal the finish.
In keeping with the gardening theme, I replaced the wooden knobs with mismatched outdoor faucet handles.
I also picked up a few faucet handles at Hobby Lobby since I didn’t have quite enough of the real thing.
I added a galvanized corn dryer to the top as a potting surface.
To make it functional, I added hinges on the back to attach it to the potting bench. It lifts up so you can dump the dirt off.
I decoupaged the inside of the cabinet door with photocopies of old seed packets.
I really hated to let this piece go, but it was for a good cause.
