🥟 Ingredients for Wonton Dipping Sauce
To make homemade dipping sauce for dumplings and wontons, you will need:
- soy sauce
- rice vinegar
- sambal oelek or chili garlic sauce
- honey
- green onion or scallions
- sesame seeds
See the recipe card for exact quantities.
🥣 How to Make Dumpling Sauce
This wonton dipping sauce comes together in minutes with minimal prep work with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and refrigerator.
First, slice the green onion. You can use either the green or white parts, or a combination, depending on your preference.
Did you know that green onions and scallions are the same plant? Scallions are just harvested earlier. They are smaller than green onions, which will have a larger white bulb.
Next add all the ingredients to a small bowl.
Whisk until combined.
Serve immediately with fried wontons or dumplings or make ahead and store in the refrigerator.
📖 Variations & Substitutions
You can customize this wonton dipping sauce to your personal preferences by adjusting the spices and aromatics.
- Add scant amounts of onion powder and garlic powder (about ⅛ teaspoon each).
- Add a clove of fresh minced or crushed garlic, or use it in place of the green onions.
- Add minced fresh ginger or garlic puree, to taste.
- Swirl in some homemade Chinese hot mustard in place of the sambal oelek or chili garlic paste.
- For a nuttier flavor, toast the sesame seeds in a nonstick pan until lightly browned and fragrant.
Storage
This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for a week. For best results, wait to add the green onions and sesame seeds until you’re ready to serve the sauce.
