Spicy & Sweet Southern Chili Recipe

With just a hint of sweetness to counter the heat, this sweet and spicy chili is bursting with flavor.

The chili is thick and hearty, made with ground beef, Italian sausage, beans, peppers, onions and tomatoes.

The chili is ready in about an hour when cooked on the stovetop.  Or you can make it in a slow cooker.

Ingredients 1 lb. ground beef 1 lb. Italian sausage  2 cloves garlic  4 TBS chili powder ¼ cup sugar 1 tsp. garlic powder ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper ½ tsp. cumin salt and pepper Continued on next slide

Ingredients 2 cans diced tomatoes 2 cans kidney beans 8 oz.  tomato sauce 1 yellow pepper  1 red pepper  1 green pepper  1 onion 

Combine meat in a bowl with fresh garlic, salt and pepper, 1 ½ teaspoons chili powder, 2 Tablespoons sugar, and ½ teaspoon garlic powder.

Brown the seasoned meat mixture over medium heat in a Dutch oven. Drain any excess fat.

Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and remaining spices to the pan.

Add kidney beans, diced onion and  chopped peppers. Stir well to combine.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.  The longer the chili cooks, the more the flavor will develop.

Serve Sweet & Spicy Southern Chili garnished with sour cream, shredded cheese and cilantro.
