This Chinese-style homemade sweet and sour sauce lives up to its name. It has a tangy sweetness that makes it the perfect dipping sauce for crab rangoons, cream cheese wontons, chicken tenders and more.

Serve it with crab rangoons, cream cheese wontons, fried shrimp, chicken nuggets, meatballs, spring rolls, egg rolls and more.

Ingredients ¾ cup brown sugar ½ cup rice vinegar ½ cup pineapple juice 3 TBS ketchup Pinch kosher salt 3 TBS cherry syrup Sambal Oelek (optional) ¼ cup cold water 1½ TBS cornstarch

Make the cornstarch slurry

Combine the cornstarch with cold water in a bowl. Mix until dissolved and set aside.

Add ingredients

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the brown sugar, pineapple juice, rice vinegar, cherry syrup, ketchup and salt.

Whisk over low heat

Cook over medium-low heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.

Add thickener

When the mixture begins to simmer, add the cornstarch slurry and stir.

Thicken sauce

Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 3 to 4 minutes.

Spice it up

Remove from the heat and stir in Sambal Oelek or chili garlic sauce, if desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

This homemade sauce can be stored in a jar or airtight container in the refrigerator for several weeks. You can also freeze the dipping sauce in individual portions in ice cube trays.
