applesauce pie in a farmhouse setting

Old Fashioned Homemade Applesauce Pie

This old-fashioned applesauce pie tastes similar to bread pudding with its homemade biscuit crust and dense applesauce filling. It's wonderful topped with ice cream.

Ingredients

For the Pie

  • 1 can Pillsbury Grands!® biscuits
  • 1 cup applesauce homemade recipe to follow
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • cinnamon
  • 1 stick melted butter
  • ½ cup to 1 cup sugar optional, depending on the sweetness of your applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Homemade Applesauce

  • 12 apples peeled, cored and chopped
  • cups water
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • ¾ cups sugar
  • ¾ TBS cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Press 5 Grands!® biscuits into the bottom of a regular 9-inch pie pan. Be sure to seal all seams and press the biscuit dough up the sides of the pan. Pierce with a fork and sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Use a mixer to combine eggs, cooled melted butter, vanilla and optional sugar. (Depending on how sweet you applesauce is, you may not need to add more sugar. (My homemade applesauce was a bit tart, so I used ½ cup sugar in my pie.)
  • Mix in applesauce, flour and nutmeg.
  • Pour mixture onto crust, being careful not to overfill. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Place the pie pan on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes, until the center is set. You may need to cover the edge of the pie with foil to keep the crust from getting too brown.

For the Homemade Applesauce

  • If you have time, I do recommend using homemade applesauce in this pie.
  • Place the cored and chopped apples, lemon juice and water in a large pan.
  • Cover. Bring to a low boil over medium low heat.
  • Stir occasionally, using the back of a spoon to mash the apples as they soften.
  • Continue cooking covered for 10-15 minutes until the apples are soft and the sauce is the desired consistency.
  • Remove from heat and stir in sugar and cinnamon. You may need to add more sugar, depending on how tart you want your applesauce to be.
