Chocolate Brownie Icing

Make boxed brownies taste homemade with this easy 5-ingredient pourable chocolate brownie icing. It's ready in just 10 minutes!  

This pour-over brownie icing is similar to a chocolate ganache, but much easier to make.

Don't feel like you have to make brownies from scratch. Use this icing recipe, plus a few easy baking tricks, to make brownies from a box taste homemade. 

They only taste homemade

Cook's Tip Most brownie mixes have a recommended baking time of 45 to 55 minutes. To make sure yours don't dry out, start checking them about 5 minutes before they're supposed to be done. 

How to Know When Brownies are Done Brownies will cook faster from the outside in, so test them in the center. A toothpick should come out with moist crumbs clinging to it — like the center toothpick above.

Ingredients for the Brownie Icing 1 ½ cups powdered sugar ¼ cup cocoa powder ¼ cup milk 1 stick butter ½ teaspoon vanilla

How to Make Brownie Icing Melt butter in a sauce pan over medium heat. Add sugar, cocoa and milk.  Whisk to combine and continue whisking until the mixture is smooth and there are no lumps.

Boil for 1 minute, while continuing to stir or whisk.  Remove from heat. Add vanilla and stir to incorporate.

Allow the icing to cool for about 5 minutes before pouring over brownies.

Allow the icing to cool completely and set before slicing brownies.
