Craft some family fun and enjoy a breakfast cereal buffet inspired by the movie, “The Secret Life of Pets.”
For as long as I can remember, my husband and I have made up bedtime stories for Jackson about what our pets do when we’re not at home.
The stories usually involve McCoy hotwiring the car and running off with Felix and the neighborhood animals to get chili dogs. They’ve been to fairs, the mall, amusement parks, foreign countries and who knows where else.
The humans in these McCoy stories are clueless about the escapades because the pets are always asleep when they get home.
So when we saw the trailer for the movie, “The Secret Life of Pets,” we knew we had to see it. (And you have to see this cute video of pets at the movie’s premiere.)
Finally. we might be able to answer the burning question:
What do our pets do when we’re not at home?
Before seeing “The Secret Life of Pets,” we did a fun craft and enjoyed a cereal breakfast buffet inspired by the movie.
Throughout July, specially marked boxes of General Mills Big G Cereals — Honey Nut Cheerios, Cheerios Multi Grain, Lucky Charms, Trix and Cocoa Puffs — will feature free character collectibles. These include Max the pampered terrier mix; Duke the massive mutt; Snowball the leader of the flushed pets; Buddy the sarcastic dachshund; Gidget the naïve; but gutsy Pomeranian and Chloe the fat cat.
They may not look alike, but those characters sound pretty familiar.
McCoy, the yorkie-poo, is a pampered terrier mix and Felix, the tabby, is one fat cat.
He’s large and in charge!
Jackson and I used scrapbook paper, glue and duct tape to transform a cardboard doghouse into party central for the movie characters. We love those #BigGPets.
We even added a miniature disco ball to our doghouse.
We’re pretty sure McCoy and Felix threw a dance party once while we were away. (Well, I’m blaming them for all the glitter that was left behind on the floor! It couldn’t have come from my crafts.)
We used the decorated doghouse and the character collectibles as the centerpiece on our breakfast table.
For our “The Secret Life of Pets” breakfast, I set out newspaper placemats and personalized “people” bowls. I used my Cricut Explore Air to make vinyl animal stickers and personalize each bowl with our names. (I used the Doodlecharms dog, cat and bunny tags in Cricut Design Space and the Zoo Day font for the letters.)
Everyone got their choice of Big G cereals.
Add a pitcher of milk, some berries and orange juice and breakfast was served!
After breakfast, we headed out for a matinee and left the pets behind, sleeping. That’s just how we found them when we got home.
But I definitely thought I heard McCoy munching on nachos behind us in the theater, and I’m sure I heard Felix meowing during the funny parts. But I couldn’t tell for sure in the dark theater.
And like I said, they were asleep when we got home. McCoy on the living room floor and Felix in his favorite chair.
I guess we’ll never really know about the secret lives of our pets. But we had fun trying to figure it out!
