In just a few days, work finally begins on our patio, or, as I’ve been calling it, our outdoor retreat. I can’t wait to kick up my feet, cocktail in hand, and relax on the patio this fall, while Jackson plays in the backyard and Bruce grills our dinner.
The above photo is a little mood board I worked up when we were first planning the space.
And here’s the blueprint that shows this is really happening — albeit in stages. Because, well, money!
Our patio going to be a place to relax (maybe even take a nap) and a place to hangout and entertain, as well as a second kitchen where we can grill out virtually year round. (One of the benefits of living in a temperate climate, like North Carolina.) It will be located adjacent to our house, right off the back porch.
The pergola, stone patio, new outdoor furniture and a brand new grill are all part of Stage 1, followed by an outdoor fireplace and possibly. a grill island.
We’re not going with a full-on outdoor kitchen. Because, well, money! And because, really, all we need is a place to grill.
I’ve been known to cook lots of things on the grill.
Roasted peppers and even salad (both of which are great pairings for hot dogs, by the way)…
Our hands-down favorite hot dogs are Ball Park Park’s Finest premium hotdogs, which are made with 100 percent beef and contain no artificial preservatives, no artificial flavors, colors or fillers. There are also no nitrates or nitrites added.
These are about to become record-breaking hot dogs, too, when Ball Park, Food Network and a team of grill masters attempt to break the world record for longest marathon BBQ by a team during the Finest Grillathon in New York City. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, a group of Brits holds the record for the longest marathon BBQ, which lasted 30 hours. Ball Park Park’s Finest wants to bring the record back to America!
I say we should all fire up our grills in solidarity. And be sure to tune in to watch the livestream of the event, which is going on now through Aug. 13.
Some Food Network personalities, like Tyler Florence, will be popping in to take a turn at the grill. (If you haven’t tried his hotdog chili recipe, you must. It’s our favorite!)
For more topping ideas, check out the baseball-themed Allstar Hot Dog Toppings Bar we created.
And I’d love to hear your recommendations for grills for our new patio. Do you have a favorite model that’s worthy of our new outdoor retreat?
