I still miss the hydrangea bush that grew in the backyard of our old house.
I’ve planted one at our new house, but I haven’t had the same luck in getting it to thrive and bloom like the one at our old place did. I guess the sun isn’t right.
But I’m still enjoying beautiful hydrangeas, long after the blooms have faded.
This summer, I snagged a few bunches of beautiful blue dried hydrangeas at the ultimate picker’s yard sale (Didn’t I tell you he had everything for sale?)
The vibrant colors of the dried hydrangeas inspired me to create this casual table setting. I think it still feels like fall, even though there are no pumpkins or traditional fall colors.
Just indigo — my new color crush — and aqua and white, paired with galvanized metal and natural elements like the wooden flatware and straw chargers.
I used my Lenox Chirp dishes, though they’re mostly hidden under the napkin, atop polka dot placemats from the Pottery Barn Outlet.
Since I can’t seem to set a table without using a mason jar, I decided to use a collection of them in this tablescape.
I gathered up a bunch of my blue mason jars and put them in this old canning rack I found at another yard sale.
This bottle carrier, another Pottery Barn Outlet find, holds a collection of refrigerator and freezer jars from the 1930s. They straight-sided jars make great vases for the dried hydrangeas.
When I went to the picker’s yard sale, I found lots of oversized mason jars. I used them for vases, too.
I’m of the mind that when you have a flower as beautiful and showy as a hydrangea, you don’t have to display it in a fancy vase. Just pull something out of the cupboard!
The table’s set. We just need a good food, good friends and good conversation to make it a picture perfect evening.

Thanks so much, Karen. Traditional fall colors don’t really work with my color scheme, so I love finding other combinations that still evoke the mood of fall. But I love orange and red and yellow in the trees!

We are kindred souls. I use mason jars all the time! They’re just so darn versatile and pretty, in my opinion. I bet we could throw one heck of a mason jar party!

No hydrangeas?? Isn’t that a cardinal sin in the world of blogging?

Your hydrangeas are beautiful. I have one bush that I’ve been tempted to transplant because I think it may get too much sun but it gets wonderful blooms so I’m afraid to mess with it. Your table looks fantastic.
