I am the queen of $5 tables.
Scuffed up old tables that look like they belonged to someone’s grandma are among my favorite things to buy at yard sales. Since they’re usually in such rough shape, the other shoppers rarely give them a second glance. And the owners just want to get rid of them. So, I can usually score them for next to nothing — $5 and sometimes less.
With a little vision, time and paint, a $5 table can be transformed into something pretty special.
This beauty started out in pretty rough shape, with peeling stain. It was also covered with dust and cobwebs. But that’s what you get when you pay $5 for a table.
I hauled it outside on a gorgeous spring day and gave it a good cleaning, then started the transformation.

I began by painting the table legs and outer edge with two coats of Vintage, a soothing gray-green shade.
Here’s a favorite trick I use when painting table or chair legs. I always turn the piece upside down to ensure I get in the nooks and crannies and don’t miss any spots.
Then, I flip it over and touch up any spots I missed.
With its scalloped edge and tray-style top, this table was the perfect candidate for a two-tone paint job.
I applied two coats of ivory DecoArt Americana Chalky Finish Paint in Lace to the tabletop.
Once the tabletop was dried, I used a stencil to add a design to the top.
For the best results when stenciling, use stencil adhesive or painter’s tape to keep the stencil from moving while you’re painting.
Use a stencil brush to apply the paint. Use a dry brush technique to prevent paint from seeping under the stencil.
I randomly stenciled birds and branches on the tabletop until I got the look I wanted.
I also added a band of ivory paint around the edge of the table, highlighting the details of the piece.
Not bad for a $5 table!
