Big Game Food Ideas
Let me give you a rundown on what’s on our football party menu and some of the ingredients I’ll use to make all those yummy apps.
- Toasted Ravioli – Mini cheese stuffed ravioli breaded in a mixture of 4C Homestyle Parmesan Cheese, 4C Seasoned Breadcrumbs and Dorot Gardens Crushed Garlic. Served with RAGÚ Simply™ Roasted Garlic Sauce for dipping. The name “Simply” says it all; this sauce is made with olive oil, plump tomatoes, garlic and onions with no added sugar.
- Late July Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips and Late July Thick & Chunky Medium Salsa – No football party is complete without tortilla chips and salsa. And Late July’s organic sea salt and lime chips and their salsa are a winning combo. You can really taste the fresh ingredients.
- Semi-Homemade French Onion Dip – So much better than the powdered French onion dip mix, but without all the work of sauteeing or caramelizing the onions yourself. I just opened up a jar of Big Lou’s Sweet Onion Sauce and added it to sour cream and mayo to create a creamy, chunky dip. Available in sweet and spicy varieties, Big Lou’s Onion Sauce is made in small batches. You can use it in recipes or as a topping on things like burgers, nachos or hot dogs. I can’t wait to try it with my homemade hot dog chili.
Air Fryer Fried Ravioli
Fried ravioli, or toasted ravioli as it is sometimes called, is a yummy appetizer that first rose to popularity in St. Louis, Missouri. But now you’ll find it on appetizer menus everywhere.
It is typically made by breading ravioli and deep frying it in oil until crispy. Fried ravioli is best served hot, when the cheese filling is still oozing, with a side of warm marinara dipping sauce.
These air fryer fried ravioli cook in just 10 minutes without the mess or added fat and calories of hot oil and deep frying. You can also prep the toasted ravioli ahead of time and cook in the air fryer them before serving.
They can also be reheated in the air fryer, oven or microwave, and you can even freeze them.
Ingredients for Fried Ravioli
- Frozen Ravioli – You can use any kind of cheese or meat-and-cheese ravioli. The miniature ravioli cooks up quickly, and it makes a nice bite-sized appetizer.
- Bread Crumbs – I used 4C Seasoned Breadcrumbs, which includes herbs, spices and pecorino Romana cheese.
- Parmesan Cheese – Sprinkle some 4C Homestyle Parmesan Cheese in the dipping sauce and add it to the breading for added flavor.
- Garlic – Pre-portioned crushed garlic from Dorot Gardens is one of my favorite kitchen hack. Keep it in the freezer and pop out a fresh clove without having to peel, crush or chop.
- Milk – Use skim milk, whole milk or whatever you prefer to make an egg wash to dip the ravioli in before breading.
- Eggs – I always use Grade A large eggs in recipes, unless otherwise noted.
- Cooking Spray – To prevent excessive smoking in your air fryer, I recommend using a vegetable oil or canola oil cooking spray.
- Marinara Sauce – Serve warmed Italian-style tomato sauce with fried ravioli for dipping.
How to Make Air Fryer Fried Ravioli
To make air fryer fried ravioli, you first need to bread the ravioli.
Prepare an egg wash and the bread crumb mixture for breading in two separate shallow bowls.
There’s no need to cook the frozen ravioli ahead of time. Just pull it out of the freezer when you’re ready to begin breading it.
While the bread crumbs are already seasoned, I added parmesan cheese and crushed garlic for extra flavor.
Dip ravioli in the egg wash, coating on both sides. For best results, allow the ravioli to soak in the egg and milk mixture a bit before breading.
Transfer ravioli to the breading mixture and coat on both sides.
If you would like a thicker coating of breading, dip each ravioli into the egg mixture for a second time. Return to the breadcrumbs and toss to coat.
Place breaded ravioli on a plate, in a single layer, to await air frying.
If you’re not ready to air fry the toasted ravioli immediately, you can keep them in the refrigerator.
When you’re ready to cook the toasted ravioli, preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees.
Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and place breaded ravioli in a single layer. Spray ravioli lightly with cooking spray.
Air fry toasted ravioli for 10 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the outside is golden brown.
Since you’re cooking the fried ravioli in batches in a single layer in the air fryer, you shouldn’t have to turn or toss them to ensure even browning. However, every air fryer is different, so you may find it helpful to turn the ravioli halfway through cooking.
Serve hot fried ravioli with a tomato dipping sauce, sprinkled with shredded parmesan cheese.
Can I freeze toasted ravioli?
Yes, you can freeze toasted ravioli, either before frying it in the air fryer or afterwards.
To freeze before air frying, place breaded ravioli, in a single layer, on a baking sheet in the freezer. When frozen, transfer to a freezer bag or airtight container.
To cook, place frozen toasted ravioli in a preheated air fryer, following the instructions in the recipe below, until heated through and golden brown. You may need to adjust the air fryer temperature and cooking time to ensure that the fried ravioli are heated through but don’t brown too much.
To freeze after cooking, place the fried ravioli, in a single layer, on a baking sheet in the freezer. When frozen, transfer to a freezer bag or airtight container. To reheat, bake at 300 degrees in an air fryer or oven until heated through, about 10 minutes.
Can I use another type of ravioli to make fried ravioli?
Yes, you can use any type of ravioli you prefer to make this recipe, including cheese ravioli, spinach ravioli, mushroom ravioli, sausage ravioli, chicken ravioli and meat ravioli. I think it’s best when there’s a nice balance of cheese and other another filling.
If using meat ravioli, you may have to adjust the cooking time and air fryer temperature to make sure the filling cooks completely. You may also have to adjust cooking times if you use larger ravioli.
