These handpainted Christmas gift tags are an adorable way to mark those special presents from Santa under the tree.
I first shared this project last year on the DecoArt blog, but it was so cute, I didn’t want you to miss it.
It was the perfect thing to share for this month’s Celebrations of Home seasonal roundup of decorating ideas, DIYs, crafts and recipes. Be sure to visit all the other participating blogs at the end of this post. If you haven’t started your Christmas crafting or decorating, you’ll find lots of ideas to jumpstart the process!
I know that at some homes, Santa gifts don’t come wrapped. But at ours, Santa likes to leave wrapped presents under the tree to prolong the wonder, excitement and surprise of Christmas morning. He must know that I’m a fan of brown paper packages tied up with strings…
Shh… don’t tell my kid, but I usually help Santa with the wrapping since he has toys to deliver across the globe. I made these cute painted wooden Santa Christmas gift tags especially for surprises from the North Pole.
There will be no mistaking who left these gifts under the tree!
Items needed:
Assorted wooden gift tags
DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Satin, 2 oz. – Black Tie
DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Satin, 2 oz. – Cottonball
DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Satin, 2 oz. – Lipstick
DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Metallic, 2 oz. – Gold
Paintbrushes
Baker’s twine or ribbon
Instructions:
Begin by painting each gift tag, front and back, with two coats of DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Satin in Lipstick. Allow to dry.
Using the Black Tie paint, paint on Santa’s belt, about two-thirds of the way down each tag. If necessary, paint a second coat.
Using a flat paintbrush and a left-to-right motion, paint a line of white fur in DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Satin in Cottonball, down the center of the tag. If necessary, repeat with a second coat.
Using a thin artist’s paintbrush, add Santa’s belt buckle in gold paint.
Thread red-and-white baker’s twine or thin ribbon through each gift tag.
The thing I love about these hand painted wooden tags is that they can be used year after year. You can personalize by painting your children’s names on the back, or use chalk if you want something less permanent.
Santa gifts don’t need much embellishment beyond these tags.
I – oops, I mean, Santa – used plain brown Kraft paper to wrap these gifts, then decorated them with stickers, holiday duct tape, ribbon and baker’s twine and the handmade tags.
I might need to look into a seasonal job as an elf in Santa’s workshop!
I love making homemade Christmas gift tags. Here are a few others you can make:

Amy…Your Santa tags so soooo cute! My little grands would love them! And I have to say that the ugly Christmas sweaters made me laugh because I had a closet full of them back when they were stylish! lol (Did I just say that out loud???) Hugs…Debbie
