Looking for easy patriotic decorating ideas for Memorial Day, Flag Day or July 4th? Create an easy sand art centerpiece using mason jars, colorful sand and tealight candles. Kids will love helping with this project. Don’t miss the video tutorial that shows you how to make them!
These easy sand art jars are a fun, patriotic craft for the entire family!
Any jar will do, from a pint-sized mason jar to a cute French yogurt jar — and any size in between.
I first shared this easy sand art project several years ago, but decided to update it with new photos and a how-to video.
My son helped me out once again. And at 11, he enjoyed this craft as much as he did when he was 7. Especially the part when we lit the sparklers in the jars!

Supplies
- Clear pint size mason jars or any clear glass jar
- Red sand
- Blue sand
- White sand
- Sparklers
- Tealight candles
Instructions
Start with an empty glass jar. (This is a recycled Oui yogurt jar.)
Then pour in the sand, in layers. I made a little gif to show you how to make your these red-white-and-blue sand jars.
And Jackson helped me with a new video tutorial for this easy sand art! Be sure to watch ’til the end because there might be fireworks. (Well, sparklers, but still pretty cool!)
If you prefer written directions for how to make this easy sand art, here’s Jackson demoing the process of filling these patriotic sand jars the first time we did this project in 2014.
Begin by pouring some sand in the bottom of the mason jar.
Top with white sand.
Finish with a layer of colored sand. Nestle tealight candles or sparklers in the top layer of sand.
There’s no right or wrong way to do these. You may opt for three bands of sand — or more. And you can start with the red or blue. Just make sure the white is in the middle if you’re trying to be patriotic.
We originally used these colorful sand art centerpieces added such a festive touch to our patriotic porch picnic.
You can never have too much red, white and blue for the Fourth!
The sand art looks very festive with tealight candles burning in them.
But we really loved sticking sparklers in the sand — and lighting them!
What a fun tabletop fireworks show!

Sand painting… now that sounds interesting. Do tell… And did you have sand all over the house, as well? So far, we’ve kept our sand jars outside for that very reason!

Definitely. Just set them up outside! Or else you’ll be vacuuming up sand for months!
