This weekend, we started a new family Christmas tradition. We invited some friends, many of whom we haven’t seen in years, over for an afternoon of cocoa and cocktails.
It was perfect, low-key holiday party that’s stress-free and fun for hosts and guests alike. No one felt like they had to wear sequins or get a baby sitter, and we didn’t stress ourselves out with an elaborate, big-budget menu or lots of exhaustive cleaning. We just served a mix of store-bought goodies and favorite snacks, like these easy and flavorful fire crackers.
When our guests had all gone, we decided we wanted to make our afternoon get-together one of our annual family Christmas traditions.
In the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it can be hard to slow down and make time for simple moments and memories. But they are so worth it.
I’ll be sharing a few ideas of activities we enjoy sharing with family and friends, as well as some tips for how you can make time for them.
Our party was a perfect example. We planned it on a whim, and sent out invitations just a few days before, which is not my usual party-planning MO.
As I mentioned earlier, we planned a simple, streamlined menu of snacks and beverages. I did my grocery shopping online a few days before.
Since the house was already decorated for Christmas and we had vacuumed earlier in the week, we didn’t have to do a major pre-party cleaning and fluffing that can leave you too tired to enjoy your guests.
Before our guests arrived, we just did a quick cleanup downstairs using Bona Wet & Dry Cloths.
The Bona disposable dusting cloths are really great for cleaning stairs quickly and reaching dust and dirt under furniture and in corners that are hard to access with the vacuum.
The Bona Hardwood Floor Wet Cleaning Pads are great for spills and quick cleanups when you only have 10 or 15 minutes to clean.
All year round, but especially around the holidays, we like to get our chores done quickly and move onto fun things. We often set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes and do a power cleaning session, and I love that I can dust and mop in that time.
The time we save cleaning up can be spent making memories. Here are a few simple family Christmas traditions we enjoy.
Make Keepsake Ornaments
Every year, we do at least one family Christmas craft. These twine-wrapped candy canes are easy enough for kids to make.
And I was so excited to make these clothespin reindeer with my son since I first made them as a kid.
Send out Christmas Cards
I know many people don’t send out Christmas cards anymore, but I still love sending and receiving them. It’s always more fun when you can get the whole family involved.
Have a family photo shoot, write a Christmas newsletter, have everyone sign the cards and help with addressing and stamping them.
Last year, my son really liked coloring these printable Minecraft Christmas cards for his friends.

Make a Family Recipe
A few years ago, my mom and I spent a whole day in her kitchen making sweets and treats for Christmas.
We burned the toffee because we were talking, but it was a great memory.
The holidays are a great time to dust off a favorite family recipe, like my grandma’s icebox fruit cake recipe, And it’s always more fun when you recruit helpers.
My son and husband love helping me make fried wontons at Christmas.
Visit Santa Claus or a Live Nativity
We love taking advantage of all our community offers during the holiday season. Parades, community tree lighting ceremonies, church live nativity events and Santa sightings are usually free and always fun.
Tour the Lights
There’s something magical about December nights spent touring the Christmas lights. No matter where I have lived, there have always been beautiful light shows to experience and enjoy during the holidays.
