We’re still sweating here in shorts and T-shirts, but the calendar has flipped to September, so it’s time to go fall out with the decorating.
Bring on the pumpkins and the acorns and the autumnal hues…
To kick off the new decorating season, I’m joining 16 other bloggers in a fall wreath hop and sharing my simple fall door decor in a vintage-style farmhouse mailbox.
Because sometimes a wreath doesn’t have to be a wreath. Or round. Or even hung on a door, as you’ll see when you check at all the creative wreaths and fall door decor from my fellow bloggers.
You’ll find links to their creations at the end of this post.
After decorating the front porch with metallic pumpkins and nontraditional colors last fall, I decided to go with a more natural feel this year, using fall leaves and foliage in yellow and orange and red hues.
I started out by wiring the vintage-style mailbox open with floral wire. I also used the wire to create a loop for hanging.
Next, I added some landscape burlap to add texture and to hold the floral stems in place.
Landscape burlap, which comes in a roll at the home improvement store is really cheap. Thee loose weave makes it a great substitute for floral foam for this project.
With my seasonal decorating, I always try to reuse elements from past years to save money. And that’s just what I did for this arrangement, using maple leaves and a garland I used in last year’s fall mantel. (Both were from Michael’s.)
I also added in a leftover seed pod from last year’s wreath and some feathers I had used previously in a Thanksgiving table setting.
Repurposing is one way I can justify decorating for the various seasons.
After I had all the florals in place, I thought my fall door decor needed a whimsical touch.
So I added a “letter” to my mailbox. I used a metallic Sharpie marker to write the words “Fall is Well” on an envelope I aged with tea stain. (You can find out my technique for tea staining in this post.)
I love how my fall (not a) wreath looks on the front door.

Given that I have a bit of a ‘thing’ for snail mail and the lost art of letter writing, I absolutely adore you idea of using an old mailbox in this way (the letter is real cute too). I would never have thought of it. Just lovely! Happy Fall to you (visiting via SITS).

Thank you! I definitely plan to use it in a lot of my seasonal decorating. Can’t wait to use it this Christmas.

Aw, thanks so much Kelli. It took me forever to come up with something to write on the envelope!
