I so thoroughly enjoyed partying along at the Copycat Magazine Challenge at Debbiedoos that I decided to do another copycat — sort of — this morning while my son and I were watercoloring.
I feel in love with this image from the July/August 2012 issue of Veranda. Ocean, beautiful flowers and greenery, a bicycle for peddling around town. Doesn’t this scene look so European? So idyllic? So perfect?

While I’ve had a watercolor artist kit sitting in my craft room for more than a year, today was my very first attempt at watercoloring. (Not counting the painting I did as a child, of course.)
I’ve taken a few art classes back in high school and done some of those wine-and-painting classes, but I am no artist. So, don’t expect to be seeing Monet-level copycat.
And remember, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Working with watercolors is very different from working with acrylic paints. A lot less forgiving, in my opinion.
Enough excuses, already. Here’s my rendering of the oh-so-perfect scene from Veranda:
Wonky bicycle wheels and skewed perspective aside, I kinda like it. And painting with my little guy sure was fun.
And speaking of the little man’s artwork, here’s what Jackson painted while I was working on my copycat masterpiece. He taped them to the fridge himself while they were still wet.
On the top row, you have his artistic interpretation of the video game Skylander, and on the second row, he’s painted a rainbow and “Cow Finds a Friend.”
Partying along at the Copycat Magazine Challenge at Debbiedoo’s
Speaking of parties, don’t forget about the big one that is coming up in two months — the inaugural Southern Bloggers Conference, scheduled for Oct. 12-13 in Raleigh.
We’ll be partying, networking and learning how to be better bloggers, DIYers and thrift shoppers from the likes of Rhoda of Southern Hospitality, Kari from Thistlewood Farm, Heather from At the Picket Fence, Annie of Maison Blanche Paint Company (read more about her here), Brittany of Pretty Handy Girl and Barb of The Everyday Home. The Atta Girls will even be teaching a DIY session!
If you don’t have your ticket, you better hurry. They’re selling fast, and we’re having a special giveaway exclusively for early birds!
Be sure to “like” the Southern Bloggers Conference on Facebook to find out what’s happening with the conference. We’ll be announcing linky parties, contests, sponsors and speakers there. Plus, it’s a great way to network with other bloggers who will be attending this event.

I like your art. And what a wonderful thing to share with your child.

I love the originality of this copy cat. I think you captured the idyllic essence of the original…Are you going to frame it?
Sharon @ mrs. hines class
I do think I will frame it. I have just the spot in my laundry room, alongside some of my other paintings.
Oh girl, you are so talented. I could never pull that one off. How sweet. Thanks for sharing with the copy cat party:)
How adorable is this painting…I hope you frame it AND Jackson’s….too cute.
over from the Challenge.
I do think I will frame my watercolor and hang it in my laundry room where I have some of my other paintings, some of Jackson’s and some that my grandmother did. They help brighten a space where I spend lots of time working!
What a great first attempt at watercolor! I love bicycle images and this one by the gate, so cute . . . Great copy!
Thank you. I’m a big fan of bicycle images, too. I don’t know why, since I don’t ride anymore. But the image is so iconic and idyllic, so pastoral even. In my fantasies, I peddle my bike down dusty streets and into a quaint little town where I buy flowers, brie and loaves of crusty bread! In reality, I schlep to the strip-mall grocery store in my mini van.
I think this one is my favorite, keep up the good work.
